KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Chinese nationals were detained for allegedly operating an international illegal online gambling racket following a raid on a premises in Cheras here.
Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said a police team from the Cheras Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice (D7) Division raided an office at Jalan Cheras at about 8pm on Wednesday (Oct 16) following a tip off.
"We discovered that the suspects were in the midst of conducting online gambling targeting customers from China.
"A total of 17 Chinese nationals - 16 men and a woman - aged between 23 and 34, were detained," he said when contacted Thursday (Oct 17).
Among the seized items were 14 laptops, 59 mobile phones along with modems and telecommunication equipment, he added.
"The suspects did not have valid travel documents. They also tested negative for drugs," he said.
ACP Mohamed Mokhsein said the office unit was rented by the suspects for RM6,000 a month.
"We believe they have been in operation for about two weeks.
"The suspects have been remanded for 14 days for further investigation," he added.
He also praised members of the public who provided the information that led to the arrests of the suspects.
