KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized a “water taxi” en route to sending five of its “passengers” to a shipping vessel in Malaysian waters here.

Tanjung Sedili maritime zone director Captain Mohd Zulfadli Nayan said the incident took place at 3.1 nautical miles southeast from Tanjung Ramunia around 4pm on Tuesday (Oct 15).

“MMEA patrol boat spotted a wooden boat behaving suspiciously.

“Upon inspection, my men detained seven Indonesian suspects on the wooden boat between the ages of 20 and 55, ” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 16).

He added that two of the suspects were believed to be the “water taxi” operators, while five other men worked on the other vessel.

Mohd Zulfadli pointed out that MMEA detained the wooden boat as part of preventive measures on theft and robbery cases, which involved similar types of boats around the area.
