SEVENTY-SIX salted fish manufacturers in Pulau Kukup suffered losses amounting to about RM5mil after approximately 100 tonnes of fish died from an unknown reason, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The Ayer Hitam MP said he found out about the issue after he made a recent visit to the mangrove

swamp areas in Pulau Kukup in Tanjung Piai.

The MCA president pointed out that the issue was raised by the salted fish manufacturers to the Agriculture and Agro-based Indus-try Minister, but it was merely dismissed as a normal phenomenon.

“The minister couldn’t do anything, they treated it as a normal phenomenon because fishes

merely died.

“Most importantly, what should have been done by Pakatan Harapan government is to find out how to help those who are facing the problem, and how the government intends to address this, ” he said.

Dr Wee interjected when Opposition leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was delivering his speech on Budget 2020 yesterday.

Dr Wee pointed out that the river was polluted by a high amount of “Biochemical Oxygen Demand”, which he said were circumstances beyond the control of fishermen.

“Was this caused by the pollution in Sungai Kim Kim? They have lost their source of livelihood.

“We must help the 76 people. This is the source of livelihood for their families, ” he said.

Ismail Sabri, who is also the former agriculture and agro-based industry minister, said the government should have a long- and short- term solution to address this issue.

“There are no specific or clear programmes to help these fishermen, ” he added.
