ALOR GAJAH: An incident where 700 chickens died in a fire at a poultry farm Masjid Tanah here is not a laughing matter.

State Agriculture, Agro-Based, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Committee chairman Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee said messages such as "cocks killed" and "700 cocks on fire" that were shared by some were not funny.

"The incident is not something to poke fun at although the word means "male fowl" in the English dictionary," he said after getting a briefing on the incident by relevant authorities on Tuesday (Oct 15).

On Monday (Oct 14), fire gutted a poultry farm in Masjid Tanah, killing about 700 chickens.

The Fire and Rescue Department took two hours to douse the fire in the 9.15pm incident.

The chickens were placed in a 122m long, 15m wide henhouse.

Masjid Tanah Fire and Rescue Department officer Mohamad Hamizan Mohd Husin said his team managed to control the fire from spreading to another five henhouses at the farm.

He added that none of the workers were injured during the incident.
