‘Boost capability during slow economic growth’

PETALING JAYA: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) need to increase their capability and competency in order to perform better during slow economic growth.

Sydney Cake House Sdn Bhd chief information officer Dr Lee Zhi Sam and Christy Ng Shoes founder Christy Ng will be tackling the issue of competitiveness through capability enhancement at the SME Thought Leadership Tea Talk #3 tomorrow at Menara Star here.

Ng will speak on the Road to Becoming a Competitive SME: The Christy Ng Story.

A top nominee for Ernst & Young’s Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017, Ng started the company six years ago.

Her business, which sells eponymously branded shoes made in Malaysia, now has seven retail stores nationwide and an e-commerce store, which serves a global audience.

The entrepreneur will speak on building her business, which leverages the Internet and its capabilities for growth amongst other benefits, to gain a competitive edge in the age of globalisation.

Sydney Cake House’s Lee will also be presenting a session titled Upscaling Your Business with AI and Digitalisation to provide insights into unlocking the value of technology for smaller companies.

As the leader for the company’s technology direction and strategy, Lee is responsible for the enhancement of its food manufacturing processes through automation and digitalisation.

The computer science expert established the company’s IT and technology arm in 2014, transforming Sydney Cake House’s previous manual operations towards the direction of smart manufacturing, which has enabled it to achieve higher productivity and operational efficiency alongside significant revenue growth.

Credit Guarantee Corporation Bhd business division marketing and sales senior vice president Wong Keet Loong will speak on the merits of bringing in expert assistance to ensure businesses are well-positioned for growth.

In a talk on Exploring Business Advisory Services, Wong will be covering the business advisory services landscape and dive into aspects where SMEs typically face the most challenges.

Themed Strengthening the Competitiveness of SMEs by Industry Leaders, the event is geared towards helping SMEs step out of their comfort zones and enable them to take the next step forward in business, alongside creating networking opportunities to further value-add for participating entrepreneurs.
