GEORGE TOWN: Visitors are spoilt for choice at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2019, which offers great travel packages. Civil servant Nathir Mohamad, 35, came all the way from Kulim, Kedah, with his wife Wan Norasidah Wan Harun, 35, and their four children.
“We took off from work and came here looking for travel packages to Sabah as we wanted to take the kids there during the school holidays.
“The children are very excited as this will be the first time they will travel by air, ” he said yesterday.
Teacher Tan Tek Leong, 51, said he was a regular visitor to the annual fair.
“Last year, we bought a cruise package. This time, we’re looking for a special deal to Taiwan, ” he said, accompanied by his wife.
The sixth edition of MATTA Fair Penang at the Setia SPICE Arena here is open to the public from 10am to 9pm until tomorrow.
In his opening speech, MATTA president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said there was overwhelming response with 99 exhibitors taking up 296 booths, which is a new record.
“We are expecting about 35,000 visitors and targeting RM41mil in sales over the three days.
“Visitors can also take part in the Buyers’ Contest with more than 65 prizes offered including return air tickets, cruise holidays, hotel vouchers and admission tickets to theme parks valued at over RM30,000, ” he said.
Tan also said plans were afoot to hold the MATTA Fair overseas as the association had received requests from neighbouring countries to do so.
“By doing this, we will be able to promote MATTA and bring visitors to Malaysia.
“We have also received invitations from the Middle East and we hope to promote Malaysia there, ” he told reporters.
Penang Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage exco Yeoh Soon Hin said MATTA Fair was an event that was eagerly awaited by Malaysians, especially those in the northern region.
“We believe that it is vital for Penang to forge a strong partnership with industry stakeholders and tourism associations.
“By working together, we can pool our ideas and resources to co-create innovative offerings that can enhance our competitiveness.
“We are making full use of the popularity of MATTA fairs to create publicity and excitement among travellers and holidaymakers, ” he said.
