She said that there had been a rise in cases from 14 in all of 2018 to 22 in the first nine months this year, adding that her ministry was working to find the reasons the perpetrators in these cases “were stressed to the point of abusing children”.
“We need to look at the whole picture to see what caused the stress when they abused the child, ” she said yesterday after visiting a four-month-old abuse survivor at the Sibu Hospital.
The boy was brought to hospital on Oct 5 by his grandmother. Fatimah said the hospital and her ministry would support and care for the child even after he is discharged.Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the police have released the the 36-year-old father of the boy.
“We have detained the 20-year-old uncle of the boy and he has been remanded until Oct 12 for investigation under the Child Act, ” he added.
