MELAKA: A good command of Bahasa Malaysia among Malaysians is a key element in narrowing the racial gap, says Malaysia Baba and Nyonya Association chairman Datuk Ronald Gan.
He said strengthening the proficiency of the national language among all Malaysians is imperative to promote harmonious living.
“Bahasa Malaysia is the language of unity and it’s really upsetting that some of us can’t converse well in it despite being Malaysian.
“It is time we give priority to enriching the command of Bahasa Malaysia among our younger generation in schools and give priority to the language, ” he said in an interview here on Tuesday (Oct 8).
Gan said Malaysians must be proud and loyal to the national language, as Bahasa Malaysia is our cultural identity.
“It’s the responsibility of every Malaysian to converse well in the language, ” he said.
Gan said his association, together with the Chitty community or Indian Peranakan, are willing to help bridge the gap between Malays and non-Malays.
He said this was one of the proposals tabled to the National Unity and Social Wellbeing Minister P.Waytha Moorthy during his meeting with the Peranakan Chinese community here recently.
“The community is committed to find similarities among Malaysians and strongly bond them together, ” he added.
