MIRI: A 68-year-old man has died of dengue, the first case here this year.

The man was from the Taman Tunku housing estate, located about 15km north of Miri city centre.

Sarawak Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim confirmed Monday (Oct 7) that the man's death was due to the mosquito-borne disease.

"This is the first dengue death in Miri this year.

"There were 248 confirmed dengue cases in Miri from January until Oct 5," she said in a statement Monday.

The man was admitted to the Miri Hospital in the middle of last month after being suspected of contracting the disease.

Miri is battling a dengue outbreak in Taman Tunku, which has about 2,000 houses.
