KUALA LUMPUR: A fresh Bill to repeal the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 (Act 803) was tabled in Parliament on Monday (Oct 7).

The Bill was tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong, and seeks to abolish the Act that was introduced under the previous Barisan Nasional administration.

“The Bill seeks to provide for the repeal of Act 803 due to the change in government policy that fake news may be dealt with under existing laws such as the Penal Code, the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“As such, Act 803 is no longer relevant, ” read the Bill.

Previously, attempts by the Pakatan Harapan government to repeal the Act hit a roadblock when it was passed in the Dewan Rakyat but failed to get the nod from the Senate.

The repeal Bill was retabled as the one-year cooling off period under Article 68 of the Federal Constitution is now over.
