PONTIAN: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has charged that the people were in “better hands” under his administration which gave them higher handouts.
The former prime minister said the Barisan Nasional had a proven record in providing assistance compared with the Pakatan Harapan government.
“The Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) payments were much higher with fishermen, shopowners, entrepreneurs and civil servants all receiving assistance.
“Now, the Tabung Haji dividend is at 1.25% which is the lowest. Recently, the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) dividend was at 2% and Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu was afraid to announce it and told a low-ranking officer to do so, ’’ he told a large gathering at a restaurant in Pekan Nenas here yesterday.
Najib said since Pakatan became the government, the stock market and ringgit value had plunged but the cost of living kept rising.
“This shows that Barisan was much better in managing the economy, ” he said.
As such, he said he was confident that Barisan would win the Tanjung Piai parlimentary by-election on Nov 16.
Najib urged Barisan supporters to work hard to ensure victory.
He also said Pakatan’s decision to scrap the Goods and Services Tax (GST) had caused the government to lose RM24bil a year.
“It is now proven that Barisan made the right move when introducing the GST, which is a better tax system than the SST, ” Najib said.
Tanjung Piai Umno division chief Datuk Jefridin Atan said he saw no issues for Najib, who is undergoing trial in the 1MDB case, to help out in the campaign.
