Homemade goodness: Chong showing his concoction of kelulut honey and Tongkat Ali in Melaka.

MELAKA: The caretaker of an old folks shelter has come out with his own health supplement formula which he plans to sell to fund the home.

David Chong On Wee said he opened the shelter – Tong Sim Senior Home – at Taman Rasah in Seremban more than a decade ago.

He said there were 12 residents living at the shelter which recently had its leaking roof and pipe repaired.

“We received funds from National Unity and Social Wellbeing Minister P. Waytha Moorthy which was used for urgent repairs.

“However, I need a steady source of funds to upkeep the shelter, and this is where I hope my very own kelulut honey and Tongkat Ali health supplement can help, ” he said.

Chong, 60, who owns a stingless bee farm in Mantin, Negri Sembilan, that produces high-quality kelulut honey, conducted a research by blending the honey with Tongkat Ali.

“I preserved it in jars for eight months.

“Then together with my four Orang Ali farmworkers, we consumed the formula and after a few days, we felt the benefits, ” he said after a meeting with Melaka Agriculture, Agro-Based, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Committee chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee here yesterday.

The state government promised to get Chong’s concoction tested by the relevant authorities.

“I thanked the Melaka government for giving me an opportunity to have my formula undergo laboratory test and certification process, ” said Chong.

He said once the certifications were obtained, he would supply the product to NGOs for them to sell to generate income.
