Illegal cigs worth over RM490,000 seized from Sibu house

SIBU: A public tip-off led enforcement officers to uncover 2,460 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM492,000 at a house here on Thursday (Sept 19).

10th Battalion GOF Commander Supt Sanudin Mohamad Isa said following the tip-off, the team went to a house in Lorong Ngu Hock at 9.30am on Thursday.

"After laying an ambush for two hours, nobody showed up. The team had to break the gate's padlock to gain entry," he said.

Upon inspection, they found the items of unpaid duties stored inside the house, he added.

"The modus operandi of the smuggler was to store the cigarettes in the house before selling them to the public," he said at a press conference on Friday (Sept 20).

Supt Sanudin believed that the illegal cigarettes were brought in from either Vietnam or China based on their packaging.

"No one has been arrested and the items have been confiscated under the Custom Act 1967," he said, adding that the items had been referred to the police for action.
