KOTA KINABALU: Several areas in Sabah will be cleaned up on Saturday (Sept 21) in conjunction with World Cleanup Day, says Trash Hero Borneo co-founder and programme coordinator Anne Maturis
The areas include Pantai Manis Papar from 7am to 9am, Teluk Likas Fasa 2 from 3pm to 6pm, Pantai Sabandar Tuaran from 9am to 11am and Plaza Harbour Mall Sandakan from 3pm to 5pm.
Maturis said other areas were Teringai Beach in Kota Marudu from 3pm to 5.30pm, Teluk Likas from 3pm to 5pm, Bum-Bum Island off Semporna from 9am to 11am and areas near the Hotel Maya in Lahad Datu from 8am to 10am.
Maturis said the initiative was designed to educate the public on the need to keep the environment clean and the importance of recycling and waste reduction.
“We need to keep the awareness strong for the benefit of the world today and for future generations, ” she said.
She is calling on all who are free on Saturday to join the event and to bring their own reusable water bottles.
Apart from Trash Hero, the Sutera Harbour Resort will be partnering with the Borneo Marine Institute of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to hold a similar programme at Kg Kibagu Island off Menggatal from 7am to 10am on Saturday.
The programme themed ‘Sustaining Kota Kinabalu’s Marine Heritage’ is a continuation of their first collaborative project in August last year.
The programme is aimed at bringing the public together to clean up the beach and learn more about marine biodiversity.
It is also aimed at creating awareness about marine conservation efforts in Sabah and how everyone can play a part to make such efforts a success.
