Haze: All schools in Penang closed on Thursday-Friday (Sept 19-20)

GEORGE TOWN: Schools in Penang will be closed on Thursday (Sept 19) and Friday (Sept 20) due to the worsening haze.

Penang welfare and caring society committee chairman Phee Boon Poh confirmed that all schools on the island, as well as on the mainland, will be closed tomorrow and Friday.

“All 398 schools involving 239,839 students will be closed due to haze, ” he said.“With the present condition which is expected to worsen in the next few days, all outdoor events like World Clean Up Day during the weekend will be cancelled.

“Penangites, please stay indoors and drink more alkaline water.

“If there is a need to go out, please put on a proper mask, ” he said.

Phee also appealed that all construction and field workers are to be given proper heavy duty masks and other safety protections.

“The management level should assist by providing their employees face masks, ” he said.

On the island, the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings hit 257 in Balik Pulau and 230 in Minden at 6pm.

On the mainland, as of 6pm, the API readings hit 186 in Seberang Jaya and 189 at Seberang Prai.
