Seberang Prai city council and seven entities sign joint charter


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A memorandum of understanding was signed between Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) and representatives from seven entities at the city council headquarters here on Tuesday (Sept 17).

The agreement was aimed to make Seberang Prai as a low-carbon and smart city with strong management that emphasised the needs of the people in the city.

The entities comprised of two educational institutions, two non-governmental agencies, two community associations and an international organisation.

They are Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, JCI Batu Kawan Chapter, Lions Club International District 308 B2, Koperasi Lestari Alam Sekitar Seberang Prai Berhad, Pusat Sumber Alam Sekitar Taman Bagan Lalang and United Council of Local Government (UCLG), who will be the city council's strategic partners in fulfilling Seberang Prai's role as a city.

State Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo witnessed the agreement signed by MBSP mayor, Datuk Rozali Mohamud.

Later in the press conference, Rozali said the collaboration between MBSP and their strategic partners will provide a positive impact in its efforts to make Seberang Prai a resilient, inclusive, green, competitive and smart city.

"This collaboration is vital to us, as it will drive MBSP towards better engagement and empowerment to the people.

"This collaboration will also build up the trust of the people with us," he said.

On Sept 16, Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas proclaimed Seberang Prai a city.

MBSP covers an administration area of 747.8sq km, making it the largest city council in the country.
