Pupils do their part to save the earth

Start them young: Ester showing two of the products that the pupils were taught to make – seed paper and bamboo straws – to instil environmental awareness.

KOTA KINABALU: It is the green thumbs up for 47 pupils of rural SK Lambidan of Kuala Penyu with their contributions to saving Mother Earth. Ester Ermelissa Ngoai, the coordinating teacher for sustainable waste management efforts at the school, said pupils produce bamboo straws to replace plastic straws, help clean the nearby Kampung Lambidan beach regularly and they are taught how to start “seed paper” to grow plants.

The school’s “Borneo Bamboo Straw” design won a state-level education innovation award in June, where it is now commercialised with the participation of villagers.
