No discussion yet, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno and PAS are not in a rush to discuss the allocation of seats for the next general election, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said what was important for both parties now was to strengthen their cooperation.

“The unification of our thoughts and political actions that will be taken are our priority now.

“The charter that formalises the pact between Umno and PAS is the beginning of the cooperation,” he said on the sidelines of the first day of Himpunan Penyatuan Ummah 2019 here yesterday.

Ahmad Zahid also said the public had shown a keen interest in the pact between the two largest Malay parties in the country.

“There has been overwhelming support for the pact, not only from Umno and PAS members but the rakyat as a whole.

“There is still some fine-tuning needed for the charter but it has been a very encouraging start for us,” he said.

Scores of supporters have turned up wearing all white for the event, with some holding banners promoting the gathering such as “muslimsliveunity” and “penyatuan ummah”.

The flags of both parties have also decorated the corridors along the halls of Putra World Trade Centre.

There were also booths selling food, party t-shirts, hijab and baju Melayu.

Ahmad Zahid reckoned the atmosphere was similar to an Umno general assembly but two times larger.
