So happy together: Couples celebrating together after their joint wedding ceremony at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society in Jalan Macalister, George Town.

GEORGE TOWN: At 15,000ft above sea level, just as accountant Chong Sin Peng was about to skydive out of a plane, a bigger surprise sprang before her.

Her boyfriend Sunny Cheah suddenly drew out an engagement ring and blurted: “Will you marry me, my darling?”

A very shocked, yet thrilled Chong, 29, quickly replied with a loud “yes!” before taking the plunge.

That memorable event last November led to the biggest leap in their lives when they exchanged their marriage vows at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society building here yesterday.

They were among 25 couples who tied the knot at the venue in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Cheah, 31, an engineer, said they got to know each other through mutual friends on social media, and dated for 10 years.

“During a vacation in New Zealand last year, I thought of the unique way to propose to her and collaborated with the flight instructors.

“The instructors made us the last two passengers to exit the plane for the proposal to take place, and it went flawlessly,” said Cheah at the colourful ceremony.

Another couple, Soh Boon Chin, 20, and Loo Zhi Xuan, 19, who got to know each other at a flight attendant’s academy in Pulau Tikus, decided it was time to get hitched after over a year of courtship.

“We actually planned to get married much later but things developed rapidly. She is now pregnant, so we decided to bring our marriage forward.

“Today is an auspicious day for the Chinese. We thought that we would solemnise our marriage in a traditional way by exchanging our vows here,” said Soh, who helps in his family-run seafood supply business.
