KUALA LUMPUR: Umno and PAS will sit down together to iron out details of their charter, following a formal political pact between the two parties, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"What is important to us is the unification of our thoughts and political actions that will be taken," said the Umno president at the sidelines of the first day of Himpunan Penyatuan Ummah 2019 at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).
When asked whether there has been any discussion on seat allocations between PAS and Umno, he said that the event was the beginning of the cooperation.
"What is important is the end product.
"We would like to see and expect overwhelming support not only from Umno and PAS members, but also the rakyat as a whole.
"I reckon this is like our annual general assembly, but two times (larger)," added Ahmad Zahid.
The signing of a political pact with a former political enemy could potentially give the country’s largest Malay party a boost, following its devastating defeat in the 14th general election last year.
The event earlier started with Wanita Umno and Muslimat PAS having a joint programme called Himpunan Wanita Penyatuan Ummah.
Pakatan Harapan leaders have criticised the pact as championing Malay-centric interests and accused the cooperation as sidelining other races.
Scores of supporters have turned up at the beginning of the two-day event wearing all white, with some holding banners such as "penyatuan ummah","HPU914" and "muslimsloveunity."
The flags of both parties were also decorated along the halls of PWTC.
Booths selling food, party t-shirts, hijabs and baju melayu were also set up at the vicinity of PWTC.
