17 lose homes after morning blaze in Sibu

SIBU: Seventeen people from four families were left with only the clothes on their backs after four wooden houses in Jalan Amoi here were razed in a fire on Tuesday (Sept 10).

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department acting deputy director Tiong Ling Hii said firemen, who arrived at the scene 10 minutes after receiving a distress call at 8.33am, could not do much as the fire was already raging by then.

"We despatched 21 firemen in two engines to the scene. When they arrived there 10 minutes after the call, the fire had destroyed 90% of the houses," he added.

Tiong said the firemen could only prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent houses.

The blaze was put under control at 9.08am.

"We are still investigating the cause of fire and assessing the total losses," he added.
