On top of that, YTL Communications is also giving away its YES woven bags that will come with other goodies when participants collect their registrations for the walk.
YTL Communications has been a StarWalk sponsor for eight consecutive years, said senior head of sales marketing and digital strategy Derek Tan.
“As a telco, we exist because we connect people together,” he said.
“And I think the Penang StarWalk is geared towards bringing families together and it is important that we (YTL) play a huge part.”
Tan said YTL Communications, under its YES brand, had been operating in Penang for about the same time and had always been sponsoring the Penang StarWalk.
“Technology is often seen as a cause of families drifting apart. Everyone’s on the phone but it can be different,” he said.
“Through the role that we play and the way we design the product, we aim to instead empower families to spend quality time together, and build connections rather than allow familial bonds to weaken.”
The Penang StarWalk which brings families together, was in line with its brand and telecommunication company, said Tan.
He said YTL Communications had a lot in common with Penang – thanks to the launch of Terragraph in George Town, making Malaysia the second country in the world after Hungary to launch this Facebook-driven technology.
Tan said Terragraph technology used mesh networking to solve urban challenges.
“In a heritage city like George Town, you cannot dig trenches on the roads to lay down fibre optic cables,” he said.
With Terragraph, YTL Communications is using existing street infrastructure such as lamp posts, traffic lights and and existing building construction to beam high-speed broadband-like quality Internet for Wi-Fi use.
So far, testing and pilot projects with SMEs, hotels and businesses have yielded higher speeds than connections delivered previously via copper wires.
“We chose to work with the Penang state government to launch this in George Town. So, we are probably the fastest public Wi-Fi in the world.
“We are proud to innovate with Penangites and the Penang state to make this technology available,” he added.
