Reject boycott of non-Muslim products, says National Chamber of Commerce

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should reject the ongoing campaign to boycott non-Muslim products as it is counterproductive and breeds hatred in a multiracial society, says the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM).

Its president Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap (pic) said the chamber viewed the campaign on social media with great concern, adding that it was a "regressive move".

"The boycott action would lead to further racial polarisation, which bodes ill and may invite retaliation if it is not properly managed," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 3).

Recently, certain groups have been pushing for a campaign on social media to boycott goods produced by non-Muslims.

Ter said Malaysians of different races had been living together peacefully and in harmony, working as colleagues in the same workplace and becoming good business partners in domestic and foreign markets.

"It is a common scene in restaurants and coffee shops, as well as stalls (warung kedai), where non-Muslim customers patronise Bumiputera-owned restaurants while Muslim customers have meals in halal restaurants and eateries operated by non-Muslim owners," he said.

"We urge all lawmakers and every Malaysian to take a common stand to reject this unhealthy boycott action as all Malaysians would stand to lose.

"Malaysians should remain united to face external challenges and not condone a course of action that would strain our harmonised race relations," added Ter, who is also the president of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM).

The campaign has been denounced by many, including Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali had also expressed his displeasure, tweeting that Malaysians should not allow economic and social relations to be dictated by racial and religious animosity or prejudice.
