Two campers killed by falling tree at waterfall


KUANTAN: A weekend camping trip for 25 friends at Lata Hammer Waterfall in Bentong turned tragic when two of them were killed after a tree uprooted and fell on them.

Bentong district police chief Supt Yusuf Unis said two other campers were also injured in the 10pm incident on Saturday.

He said the deceased had been identified as Winnie Tan Gaik Kin from Taman Ikan Mas, Kuala Lumpur, and Chin Kean Hwa from Puchong. Both were in their 40s.

“Witnesses claimed that the tree, which has a circumference of about 2m, had fallen towards the area they had set up a tent.

“Both are believed to have fallen down a 60m-deep cliff.

“Their bodies were found under the tree by the Fire and Rescue Department, ” said Supt Yusuf.

The injured campers have been identified as Tan Wai Hong and Leong Yau Lai, both in their 40s.

Tan suffered injuries on his hand, leg, and chest while Leong sustained injuries on her left foot. — Bernama
