GEORGE TOWN: Armed with Jalur Gemilang and colourful balloons, thousands of Penangites thronged the streets during the #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk here at Eco Terraces in Paya Terubong.

Among the participants on a bright Merdeka morning was Heng Choon Khim, 44, and her family.

Heng, who lives in Bagan Lalang, Butterworth, said it was the first time they joined the meaningful event.

“This is a nice way to celebrate Merdeka Day along with all Malaysians.

“It is our hope to see the country develop and continue to improve as we celebrate our 62nd independence, ” she said before the walk was flagged off here yesterday.

She was with her husband Ng Yew Wai, 43, and their two sons Guan Tik, 14, and Hong Eu, nine.

“It is fun as we get to carry the flags and balloons while walking, ” Hong Eu said.

The family was among the participants who turned up for the 5km morning walk and hike from Jalan Paya Terubong to Nan Shan Hill in Air Itam.

They were flagged off by Eco World Development Group Bhd deputy chief executive officer Datuk Sundarajoo Somu.

He said Penangites were truly Malaysians as many turned up early to celebrate togetherness on Merdeka Day.

“We have so many Malaysians from diverse backgrounds proudly wearing the #AnakAnakMalaysia wristbands and walking together for the love of our country.

“This walk is a testament of Malaysia’s unique spirit of unity, ” he said before flagging off the walk.
