IPOH: Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu has announced that he will take over executive council member Paul Yong Choo Kiong’s duties while Yong goes on an indefinite leave.
He said Yong would not attend meetings as an exco member or make any decisions, but he would continue with his duties as a Tronoh assemblyman.
“I, meanwhile, will take over the responsibility to chair all the five portfolios under his jurisdiction, ” he told media after a session with state civil servants during the “Love My Palm Oil” campaign in conjunction with Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok’s visit to Perak yesterday.
Yong was charged with raping his former Indonesian maid and claimed trial at a Sessions Court here last Friday.
Prior to court proceedings, Ahmad Faizal advised him to go on leave and on Sunday, Yong in a statement said he would go on leave from his official duties.
Ahmad Faizal pointed out that it was not an issue for him to take over Yong’s portfolios.
For example, Yong was the housing committee chairman while he (Ahmad Faizal) was already the Perak Housing and Property Board chairman, he said.
On how long Yong was expected to go on leave, Ahmad Faizal said that he was unable to give a definite period.
“Let him (Yong) focus on his case, and as for the state administration, we will be able to carry out our duties as usual, ” he said, adding that it would not pose any problems as collective decisions were made during weekly meetings.
On when the swearing-in ceremony for exco members would take place – which had been deferred when Yong’s case came up – Ahmad Faizal said that they would have to wait for the Sultan of Perak to decide.
He said he had spoken with the Sultan about the state’s administration, but the issue of swearing-in was not brought up.
Ahmad Faizal said there was no need to reshuffle the exco members.
