Man and grandchild killed in accident

GERIK: A five-year-old boy was flung out of a car during a collision with a lorry in an accident which also killed his grandfather.

Fahrin Haris Abdullah, five, and retired policeman Ibrahim Osman, 58, were killed on the spot when tragedy struck at the 38.8th kilometre of the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway early yesterday at about 12.20am.

“The boy, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was flung out of the vehicle, ” said Gerik OCPD Superintendent Ismail Che Isa.

He said the 46-year-old driver of the lorry that was carrying gas cylinders was not injured in the accident.

Supt Ismail said the driver of the car was believed to have lost control of the vehicle and swerved onto the opposite lane while negotiating a bend.

“The road was also wet and the area is dimly lit, ” he said, adding that they were headed towards Jeli, Kelantan.

“The lorry driver was unable to avoid the oncoming car and crashed.

“We will investigate this under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving resulting in death, ” he added.
