KUCHING: Sarawak Assistant Minister of Transport Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, who is currently partyless, has applied to join the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, says Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Chief Minister said Dr Jerip's application was "being considered", but declined to give further details.
"I don't have to tell you," he said on Friday (Aug 23) when asked which component party Dr Jerip was applying to join.
"He has applied to be in GPS, so it's okay. I will let you know (when he is accepted)," he added.
Abang Johari was responding to questions on why Dr Jerip was retained in the state Cabinet in a minor reshuffle announced on Thursday (Aug 22), despite being partyless.
GPS comprises Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Besatu (PBB), Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
Dr Jerip, who was formerly Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) deputy president, resigned from the party on July 11 and pledged his full support to Abang Johari's leadership.
A splinter party of SUPP, PSB is not a member of GPS, although Dr Jerip and party president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh were in the state Cabinet.
On July 15, Wong resigned from the Cabinet after PSB was sidelined from having councillors in the state's local authorities.
