PETALING JAYA: The controversial appointment of 13 state sports development coordinators by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman were done in accordance to existing public service procedure.
“I think this is an administrative decision, and we will abide (by the appointment)," says Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Steven Sim.
"The appointment was made based on existing public service procedure, so I feel that there isn’t an issue whether the person is from a (particular) group, association or any parties, ” he added.
Sim was speaking to reporters when met during the Malaysia Sports Challenge (MySC) Hi-Tea 2019 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Wednesday (Aug 21).
Pressed by reporters to respond to allegations of croniysm, Sim merely repeated his earlier remark.
“I’ve already answered your question.”
Syed Saddiq has been the focus of criticism after a letter by the National Sports Council detailing the appointment of 13 new state sports development coordinators was posted by Negri Sembilan Youth Council president Mohd Fairos Rusli on Facebok.
Parti Ikatan Malaysia’s (Ikatan) Youth Wing alleged that the 13 appointments were made by the Youth and Sports Minister in an effort to garner grassroots support as the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia polls drew closer.
Bersatu’s first party polls since its formation in 2016 is speculated by certain parties as taking place later this year.
