HULU SELANGOR: “I heard a woman shouting for help but the blaze was just too intense and it spread very fast,” said a next-door neighbour of three in a family who perished in a fire in Kampung Alah Batu, Ulu Bernam here.

Rabaiah Yunus, 58, who lived next door to the victims, said she heard someone screaming for help just as she woke up to cook for her daughter who was returning to Manjung, Perak.

“My son-in-law, who was also up, heard the shouts and thought there was a thief but when we came out of the house, we saw the flames getting bigger.

“We could not do anything except to alert other neighbours who were asleep,” said a tearful Rabaiah.

After the pre-dawn incident yesterday, the charred bodies of Mohd Sharidan Abdul Aziz, his wife Siti Rafini Mohd Rafiee, in their 30s, and their toddler son Rafiq Mohd Sharidan were found in a room.

Rabaiah said Mohd Sharidan and his family had moved in January and were good neighbours.

“I thought of them as my own children,” she said.

Mohd Sharidan’s father, Abdul Aziz Mohd Idris, 58, said the victim was the third among five siblings and was close to him.

“I last met him yesterday (Sunday) as there was an engagement feast in my house.

“He stopped by my house almost every day whenever he went out to do business.

“We have accepted the loss of my son, daughter-in-law and grandson,” he said.

Abdul Aziz said the late couple sold fried chicken next to SMK Besout near here, and they had a son aged 14 months.

It is learnt that all the victims were laid to rest at Kampung Kuala Slim Muslim Cemetery here after post-mortem by Slim River Hospital Forensic Unit.

Hulu Selangor police chief Supt Azman Ab Rahman said the cause of fire had yet to be determined and they were still waiting for a report from the Fire and Rescue Department.

Earlier, a spokesman from the department in Perak said that after receiving a call at 3.51am, they rushed a team from the Slim River station with assistance from Tanjung Malim and Kuala Kubu Baru to the scene.

“The couple and their son were found in the first room of the house,” he said in a statement.

Separately, in Kuala Terengganu, a row of five shophouses in Jalan Sultan Mohamad near SJKC Chung Hwa Wei Sin was destroyed in a fire on Sunday night with losses estimated at about RM1.2mil.

Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said they received a call at 10.33pm before dispatching 35 firefighters from Kuala Terengganu, Jalan Kota and Marang stations in four fire engines.

He said three of the five lots sold lighting and electrical appliances while the other two housed a motorcycle spare parts shop.

Mohamad Shoki said the flames were brought under control at about 11pm and the cause of fire was still being investigated. — Bernama
