KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno has identified potential candidates to field should a by-election be called for the Kimanis Parliamentary seat held by Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, who won on an Umno ticket.
Sabah Umno chief Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (pic) said the state committee met on Saturday night and made the decision to contest the Kimanis seat.
“We have identified three candidates and will make known our choice soon, ” he said.
Bung also added the candidate eventually chosen to stand in Kimanis would be one acceptable to the people in the area.
Bung said Kimanis Umno has been asked to immediately start their election machinery at the 19 polling locations in Kimanis.
He said it was also decided that all 25 Umno divisions in the state start working the ground in Kimanis immediately.
“It is our seat, we will go all out to win it back, ” he said.
He said they hope to work together with opposition groups like Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Sabah STAR, similar to what was done in the Sandakan by-election.
Anifah, who had defected to become an independent candidate following the May 9 general election, won the seat by 156 votes against Warisan’s Datuk Karim Bujang.
He is expected to appeal the Aug 16 Election Court decision to nullify the Kimanis election result after finding more than 300 votes were improperly cast, among other irregularities.
The Election Commission and its returning officer, who were also found to have not complied with the due process of the law under Section 32 (b) of the Election Offences Act 1954, said that they would not be appealing.
