ALOR SETAR: A plate of chicken rice with soup for only RM1.70 is not an urban myth.

In fact, all the food at D’Kafe Restaurant in Jalan Kubang Lembu in Jitra costs RM1.70 per plate.

Since it opened in early June, the restaurant has been offering 24 dishes to the local community.

Their customers do not only include the poor but white collar workers as well.

Restaurant owner Anis Mardhiyah Yaakob, 24, from Taman Suria, said the menu includes seafood fried rice, old cucumber soup, tom yam, laksa, curry noodles, fried potatoes and even banana split ice creams.

Many people come here for the affordable food because of the higher cost of living now, she said.

Anis said she understands the difficulties faced by couples or families with many children.

“I fully understand their situation as I also come from a poor family. My father was a bus driver, ” she said.

Anis said her mum does all the cooking while her five sisters and her run the restaurant with the help of five more workers.

“I was a housewife for a few years before I decided to help my mother Habibon Hashim, 59, here at the restaurant, ” she said.

“It has been my dream to run my own restaurant, selling affordable food, ” she said.

Anis said that she spent about RM20, 000 to ensure her customers had a cozy and comfortable place to have their meals.

“Each day, I need to make about RM800 to sustain this business.

“The rental for our venue alone is around RM2, 000 per month, ” she explained.

The shop opens from 11.30am till 9pm every day except Friday.
