KUALA LUMPUR: The number of dengue fever cases nationwide reported from January to Aug 10 has surpassed the figures reported for the whole of last year, according to the Health Ministry's data.
From January to Aug 10, 82, 529 dengue cases were reported, compared with 80, 615 cases reported for the whole of last year.
And the number of deaths reported from January to Aug 10 were not far from the figures for the whole of last year; 120 deaths compared with 147 deaths.
This is an 85% increase of cases between January and Aug 10, compared with 44, 613 cases in the same period last year, said the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre of the Health Ministry, which posted its findings on Facebook on Wednesday (Aug 14).
From January to Aug 10, as many as 120 deaths were reported compared with 73 deaths during the same period last year.
For the weekly report, from Aug 4 to 10, seven dengue related deaths were reported nationwide as the number of dengue fever cases increased by 4.3%, totalling 3, 378 cases.
There were two deaths and 3, 238 dengue cases reported the week before (July 28 to Aug 3).
From Aug 4 to 10, about 17 chikungunya cases were also reported, while 451 chikungungya cases were reported from January to Aug 10.
Additionally, the Zika surveillance done by the National Public Health Lab and Institute of Medical Research found negative results from 1, 723 blood samples and 35 urine samples received among individuals with suspected symptoms and signs of Zika.
