JOHOR BARU: A PKR lawmaker has called on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to step down as Prime Minister and save the Pakatan Harapan government from self-destruction.
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim says that he believes that there is no other way to prevent a collapse in the Pakatan coalition, citing examples of what had happened to previous political partnerships such as Gagasan Rakyat, Barisan Alternatif and Pakatan Rakyat.
"I hope and request Dr Mahathir to take a brave step like former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill who resigned from his post after leading the British and Allied forces to win the Second World War after defeating Germany and Japan.
"Dr Mahathir will always be remembered and respected for leading Pakatan in defeating Barisan Nasional in the last general election where we formed a new government peacefully through a smooth transition of power, " he added.
Hassan, who is also the former Johor PKR chairman, said this in a statement here on Wednesday (Aug 14).
However, he added that it was now time for Dr Mahathir to hand over the premiership to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim immediately if the government was to be saved in the wake of several controversial issues that could disunite the rakyat.
