KUALA LUMPUR: While the government works to build affordable housing for the B40 group, it is also equally important that their living standards be improved, says Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

Community building is an important aspect in the effort to provide affordable housing for this group, as this would both educate and encourage them to maintain their homes and facilities for their betterment, she added.

“It will be good for the country if we can bring up this group, ” she said at the StarProperty.my Property Fair at KLCC here yesterday.

Zuraida said that when the B40 homeowners can ensure that their properties are well maintained, it would increase the value of their homes. And when the time comes for them to upgrade, their homes would have increased in value and fetch a higher price.

“We are essentially empowering them with the opportunity to better themselves, but the community building aspect is necessary, ” she said.

Zuraida also believed that the target to build about one million houses can be achieved while 130, 000 houses are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“We are confident of achieving this target because many developers also build affordable homes. The target is not just what the government builds but also that of the private sector, ” she added.

Zuraida said the government is encouraging more developers to join in the effort, adding that 20 parcels of land would be tendered out to developers to build affordable homes for the lower-income groups.

“We expect about 20, 000 homes to be built on the parcels of land.

“We will be releasing another 20 parcels once the previous ones have been taken up, ” Zuraida added.

For the youths, she said it is important to educate them about the property market so that they can make well-informed decisions when the time comes for them to buy their homes.

She added that the government has also made it possible for young buyers to apply for housing loans even though they have yet to settle their PTPTN loans.

Zuraida said she was pleased that StarProperty.my was assisting the government in its Home Ownership Campaign through the property fair to give potential housebuyers a venue where they could seek out reputable developers.

The two-day StarProperty.my Property Fair will end today.

Opening hours are from 11am to 7pm.
