BUKIT MERTAJAM (Bernama): Malaysia will work closely with Turkey to boost the country's defence industry, says Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu.
Mohamad, who is more popularly known as Mat Sabu, said Turkey was a country that was admired for its strength in defence and thus Malaysia would work together with the republic to explore areas towards this end.
"Turkey has been in the forefront of the industry, their defence industry is at Nato (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) level, and through the joint statement made by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his recent visit to the country, Turkey is willing and ready to work with us.
"And we will build this partnership to enhance the industry, " he told reporters after attending a hi-tea at his alma mater, SMK Bukit Mertajam here, Tuesday (July 30).
Mohamad, who was also in the Malaysian delegation, said the cooperation with Turkey included plans to buy defence equipment suitable for use in the country.
In another development, Mohamad, who is also the Parti Amanah Negara president, said he had not yet made a decision on whether to defend his post in the coming party elections. - Bernama
