PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) has questioned de facto law minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong for defending a minister’s aide who was being investigated for corruption involving a watch.
The MCA president said Liew’s reآآmarks contradicted Malaysian Anti-آCorruption Commission’s (MACC) statement as it had clarified that the case involving the political aide was not closed.
MACC, added Dr Wee, also said that the investigation papers had been sent to the Attorney General’s Chamآbers on July 10 for further action.
He said news portal MalaysiaKini also published an article about a confession letter revealing that the political secretary admitted to receiآving the watch as a gift but had denied that it was a bribe.
According to MalaysiaKini, Liew had in Dewan Negara said that the political secretary had purchased the watch, adding that MACC freed the man as he was able to explain where he had obtained the money to buy it.
Dr Wee said based on this revelation by MACC and MalaysiaKini, Liew’s statement was contradictory.
“So, it is better if Liew resigns if he fails to give a convincing explanation,” he said on his Facebook page here yesterday.
On April 1, the political secretary to the Agriculture and Agro-based Inآآdusآآtry Minister was arrested for allegedly receiving a luxury watch worth RM28,000 as a gift.
The following day, a remand order was obtained to hold him for four days to assist in the investigation.
It was also reported the poliآtical secretary had allegedly received the watch from a developer in return for his assistance in securing contracts from the ministry for the developer.
