BUKIT MERTAJAM: The third FitMalaysia sporting event for the year saw a huge turnout at the MPSP Sports and Recreation Complex in Jalan Betek here.

The previous two held this year took place in Selangor and Terengganu.

Some 2,000 of the participants joined a 30km fun cycling event while another 8,000 people took part in the 5km fun run yesterday.Other activities yesterday included aerobic and zumba dance sessions, martial arts, sports equipment and apparel showcase, and various games for all ages.

The crowd also saw Chai Wei Kean, 29, making his way into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the longest four-finger hang on a bar, clocking one minute and 20 seconds.

MBOR chief operating officer Christopher Wong presented the certificate to Chai after he accomplished the feat.

Mohamad Nur Faris Ghazali, 14, who is unable to walk due to the absence of hip bones since birth, completed the 5km run by rolling on a skateboard with his hands.

“All this while I’ve been going for a swim only. This is my first time completing a 5km ‘run’,” he said.

The crowd cheered as Mohamad approached the finish line and collected his finisher medal.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the 25,000 people who participated were more than anticipated, and higher than the previous ones held in Selangor and Terengganu.

“People of all background and ages from 85 years old to as young as 11 joined the event. Even those who did not manage to register came to have fun.

“With the big number of sport enthusiasts in Penang, the ministry is looking into upgrading the complex here,” he said after launching the event yesterday.

Asked on the allocation for the complex upgrading, Syed Saddiq said he was waiting for the report to determine the extent of damage and requirements.

“We will work according to the needs,” he said.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim, who is also Bukit Mertajam MP, Penang Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee and Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee completed the 5km run while Syed Saddiq took part in the 30km ride.
