PONTIAN: An ice-cold teh tarik and a packet of nasi lemak is the breakfast of choice for Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar who began his 22nd edition of Kembara Mahkota Johor here.
His Majesty had the simple dish together with his two sons, Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman Ibni Sultan Ibrahim and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar at an old kopitiam along Jalan Taib here.
Jong Suan Hiang kopitiam owner Tan Hai Seng, 64, said Pontian District Council officers informed him that Sultan Ibrahim would be visiting his shop for breakfast about a week ago.
“It is a great honour to have our beloved Sultan and the two princes having their breakfast at my small kopitiam.
“It is very nice of Sultan Ibrahim to have his breakfast at my shop, which has been in business for more than 80 years,” he said, adding that the two princes had eggs and coffee for their breakfast.
Tan said that he could only shake His Majesty’s hands and could not have a proper conversation with Sultan Ibrahim as he was busy making drinks for customers who crowded his shop.
The district is the first checkpoint for Kembara, and a large crowd gathered at Dataran Majlis Daerah Pontian here for a chance to meet and greet His Majesty and other members of the royal family.
Sultan Ibrahim arrived on his Flintstones-inspired design Harley-Davidson 2019 Road King Special Touring Bike with Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar, as well as his son-in-law Datuk Dennis Muhammad Abdullah at around 8.30am yesterday.
Sultan Ibrahim also launched a coffee table book, which has over 100 pages of Kembara memories from 2001 until 2018 at the checkpoint here.
Johor Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah and Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar both arrived at the location in four-wheel drive vehicles.
In this year’s Kembara, His Majesty will embark on a 686km journey across 10 districts in Johor in his commitment to meet the people.
