PETALING JAYA: Five tourists from Johor won RM3,003,100 after they bought Big Sweep Draw tickets from a blind ticket seller while on holiday in Ipoh.
The five had admired the ticket seller's determination to stay independent and decided to support him by buying 50 tickets.
Not long after, they hit the jackpot by winning the first prize.
"Knowing that we were rewarded by being charitable brought out the biggest smiles on our faces. We can now afford to travel to places farther away," they said.
The second prize ticket worth RM1mil was won by a retiree in his 70s in Klang.
"I buy several Big Sweep tickets every draw with the hope of winning something big.
"As usual, my wife reminded me to check the draw results and a sweet surprise was waiting for me as I won the second prize," he said.
He plans to share his winnings with his children, and plans to go on a holiday with his wife after setting aside some funds.
The next draw will be held on July 28, 2019, at the Selangor Turf Club.
Since 2015, all surplus funds from the Big Sweep have been donated to the Yu Cai Foundation (YCF), a charitable organisation dedicated to nurturing talent through education.
YCF's vision is to give deserving students of all races the opportunity to achieve the full potential through education.
The foundation strongly promotes the learning of vernacular languages, believing that this is fundamental in preserving a cultural heritage.
