SEREMBAN: A 65-year-old grandfather, who claimed trial to eight charges of sexually assaulting and grooming a 12-year-old girl, has been denied bail.
Sessions Court judge Junaidah Mohd Isa rejected the request from V. Subramaniam after deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said the accused was staying near the victim’s home.
“This is a serious case as the accused is facing a series of charges.
“If he is allowed bail, he will have easy access to the girl and her parents, who are potential witnesses,” he told the court yesterday.
Subramaniam pleaded not guilty before Junaidah after an interpreter read the charges to him in Tamil.
He was charged with producing and being in possession of a pornographic clip, featuring him and the victim, at a parking lot in Seremban Municipal Council hawker complex at around 6pm, between the second and third week of June.
The accused, who is married, was also charged with masturbating in front of the victim and forcing her to do the same and other acts, promising to give her presents.
He was charged under Sections 5, 10, 12, 14(a), 14(b), 15(a)(1), 15(c) and 15(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act.
For more serious offences, offenders can be jailed up to 30 years and given six strokes of the rotan.
The accused was also charged with being in possession of child pornography in his two cellphones.
He allegedly committed the offence at the district police station here at 2.30am on July 10.
For this, Subramaniam, who was unrepresented, was charged under Section 293 of the Penal Code.
In mitigation, the lorry driver pleaded to be released on bail as he had to provide for his children.
“I also have to look after my grandchild,” he said.
Junaidah fixed Aug 21 for mention.
