Dr Wee questions stark increase in service fee at Johor UTM

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has taken Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik to task over the stark increase in service fees at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor.

The MCA president pointed out that UTM had informed all its students of the fee increase in a circular dated July 9, and added that it has irked many.

“Beginning from the second semester in the 2019/2020 academic year, the service fee will see a huge increase from RM329 to RM700 for a degree course in engineering.

“As for degree courses in other fields, the service fee has been revised from RM314 to RM685

“This means UTM has suddenly increased their fees for more than 100% for students pursuing their first degree,” he said in a Facebook post Friday (July 19).

The Ayer Hitam MP noted that the same fee for master's courses also saw a rise from RM509 to RM830 - a whopping 63% jump.

“What is the response of Dr Maszlee, who supposedly understands the people’s suffering?

“I also hope Dr Maszlee will verify the authenticity of the circular and not blame Wee Ka Siong,” he added.
