KANGAR: The man believed to have set Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin’s official car on fire in March had injured another religious official last year.

Police said the suspect injured Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs Department director Dr Hazman Hassan in September last year.

Perlis police chief Senior Asst Comm Noor Mushar Mohamad said the suspect nicknamed “Mie Tomoi’ confessed to both crimes during interrogation by police last week.

“He admitted to having been paid to commit the crimes,” he said.

Dr Hazman was severely injured after he was slashed on the face with a sharp weapon believed to be a samurai sword by a man who broke into his house on Sept 3, 2018.

Authorities disclosed that someone offered a large amount of money to two men to splash acid on Mohd Asri’s face but they refused and only agreed to damage his car.

One of the suspects identified Mie Tomoi as his friend who helped carry out the act for RM500.

Mie Tomoi, 48, who was remanded for six days for allegedly setting the car on fire, will later be remanded over Dr Hazman’s case.

Mie Tomoi has 16 previous records for robbery and drug abuse cases. — Bernama
