SEREMBAN: Five individuals pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing a policeman from carrying out his duties during the Rantau by-election period in April.
S. Vigane Swaran, 52; S.R. Mangaswaran, 37; M. Sega Sivakumar, 37; and S.M. Arun and A. Yeohvan Louis, both 25, claimed trial before magistrate V. Vanita after the charge was read to them.
They were charged with deliberately obstructing Sjn Yusof Md Medak from carrying out his duties by inspecting the boot of his patrol car.
The offence was allegedly committed at SRJK Chung Hua in Rantau around 6pm on April 13.
They were charged under section 186 of the Penal Code, which was read together with section 34 of the same legislation.
Offenders can be jailed up to two years and fined up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction.
They were slapped with an alternative charge of obstructing the policeman from carrying out his duties to escort ballot boxes.
The offence was said to have been committed at the same place and time. They were charged under section 341 of the Penal Code read together with section 34.
Offenders can be jailed up to a month or fined RM1,000 or both.
The court allowed the accused to be released on a bail of RM2,000 each and fixed July 31 for re-mention.
