PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has laughed off claims that DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang was behind the founding of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

The Prime Minister and Bersatu chairman said such claims were probably made by people who "belonged at Tanjung Rambutan (mental institution)".

"Yes, Lim Kit Siang held a meeting with all the Malay leaders and told them that there is a pressing need to form a Malay party. And all of us agreed and replied 'ya ya ya'.

"If you want to believe that, then it is up to you.

"The Malays have a very strong inferiority complex. You don't think that Malays cannot think for themselves," said Dr Mahathir at a press conference after chairing a Bersatu supreme council meeting here on Monday (July 15).

The claim was made by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in his speech to Umno delegates at its division meeting in Kedah recently.

Najib had said he was told by an individual who attended the meeting that Lim had proposed to Dr Mahathir to form a new Malay party.
