Robbery gang targets elderly women

Ill-gotten gains: Some of the items seized by police from the suspects’ houses in Penang and Kedah after Ops Rentap Sempadan, being displayed at a press conference at the police headquarters in Penang.

GEORGE TOWN: Two men “patrolling” on a motorcycle targeted elderly women sweeping the compounds of their homes to rob them of their jewellery.

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said the men also specialised in robbing elderly women walking alone.

“Their main targets are women aged between 55 and 83 years.

“When they identify the victims, they will approach them on the pretext of asking for directions before snatching their gold chains.

“They would also use fake registration plates on their getaway bike,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters here.

SAC Zainol said police arrested three suspects, including a woman, aged between 27 and 33 years, during Ops Rentap Sempadan near the Swettenham Pier on Wednesday.

He said the trio then led police to two houses in Seberang Jaya and Pokok Sena in Kedah, where they picked up a 29-year-old woman.

Police found jewellery and motorcycle number plates and 10 packets of drugs believed to be syabu.

“We believe the four were responsible for 34 thefts cases in Penang, Perak and Kedah,” he said.

SAC Zainol said one of the women would sell the stolen jewellery at a low price via Facebook, while the younger one was involved in renting houses to store the goods.
