Melaka exco member plans to give Dr M durians as a birthday gift

MELAKA: Norhizam Hassan Baktee is heading to Putrajaya with basket of Musang King durians as a birthday gift to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The State Agriculture, Agro-based, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Committee chairman said he would deliver the durians to Dr Mahathir by Wednesday (July 10) night.

"We wish our Prime Minister many returns of the day. Melaka has been successful in producing various species of durian and we want Tun to savour our success," he said here on Wednesday.

Norhizam said Melaka had given priority support to local farmers to cultivate species like Tracka, Kim Hong, Black Thorn, Udang Merah, XXO, D101, D24, D13 and Mas Johor.

He said durian was the most profitable cash crop and Melaka is capitalising on China's demand for the king of fruits.

Norhizam said the state is devising a mechanism to improve its logistical network to market the fruit overseas.

He also noted that the local market segment for Melaka's Durian Kampung and D24 have also increased significantly.

"We are also creating a network of entrepreneurs in Melaka to manufacture and market durian-based products such as mooncakes, frozen pizza, bubble tea and coffee," he added.
