GEORGE TOWN: The police have busted several human traffickers, following an operation to identify the smugglers bringing in Rohingya nationals to Penang from Myanmar.

Arrests were made in three locations in North Seberang Prai on the mainland.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk T. Narenasagaran in a statement on Tuesday (July 9) said five people were detained in the operation.

“Three Rohingyas, believed to have been involved in trafficking Rohingya people into the state, were arrested.

“During the investigation, we found that one of them is an agent for making fake UNHCR Malaysia cards.

“Two victims, who are Rohingya, were also arrested,” he said.

Comm Narenasagaran added that the three traffickers would be investigated under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), and the two victims under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
