Johor Sultan:Use education system to promote unity

JOHOR BARU: The country’s education system should play a vital role in promoting unity among the people, says Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

The Johor Ruler said the spirit of unity must start in schools.

“There should also be efforts to promote peace and harmony among the people, including an emphasis on history to strengthen the people’s identity.

“I believe that the education system plays an important role in helping to forge unity in the country,” he said after receiving a courtesy call from Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik at Istana Pasir Pelangi yesterday.

Sultan Ibrahim, via his official Facebook page, also emphasised the importance of children having a good command of the English language without neglecting the use of Bahasa Malaysia.

“To ensure students are multilingual, Mandarin and Tamil should continue to be taught in schools,” he said, adding that the ability to master many languages would be an added advantage in improving race relations.

During the hour-long discussion, Maszlee sought the Ruler’s views on the direction of the national education system.
