KUALA LUMPUR: An additional RM240mil has been allocated for upgrade and repair works of federal roads, says Deputy Works Minister Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir (pic).
He said the RM240mil additional allocation was on top of the approved allocation of RM362mil by the Finance Ministry that was approved under Budget 2019 for repairs and upgrade of federal road this year.
"The total allocation approved so far is RM602mil. However, the Finance Ministry has given its guarantee of another RM180mil and this will bring the total allocation to RM782mil," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) during Question Time.
Mohd Shahar had asked the Works Ministry to reveal whether the allocation for repair and upgrade works of federal roads was enough under the 2019 Budget.
Mohd Anuar explained that the Ministry would receive the allocation from the Finance Ministry in stages and will be based on the priority of the project.
"We do not receive it all in one go, but in stages. It shows that the Finance Ministry always gives due priority to all of our additional financial request," he said.
He added that selected concession companies were responsible to carry out small repair works while a notice of defect (NOD) will be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for extra allocation on big projects.
Mohd Tahir also said as of May this year, a total of RM124.3mil (34.33%) of the allocation had been used to repair and upgrade 17,830.33KM of federal roads.
"To ensure that the roads can be repaired immediately, the Works Ministry will appoint a concessionaire company via a priate agreement under the standard work routine which requires them to inspect federal roads atleast twice a week.
"If there are any defects, the roads need to be repaired within a period of 24 hours in line with the ministry's zero pothole initiative which was introduced in Feb 2016," he said.
